HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH CROSSFIT?

My younger brother, Thomas, was the one who introduced me to CrossFit. At first glance, this new workout program looked miserable and all about weightlifting. I could have cared less about lifting weights and my perception of what working out should be was “cardio, cardio, cardio”. I was a Zumba Instructor before CrossFit! Well he persisted for about a year and finally I caved. Just like that I was hooked. Ever since then I have been addicted to this rigorous but remarkable program and lifestyle called CrossFit.

WHY DO YOU LOVE CROSSFIT?

First off, the community is amazing. It’s so inspiring to see so many awesome and like-minded people at CrossFit boxes, events, and where ever else all going through the same vicious workout and building that sense of comradery. It truly is something you just have to experience to understand! Second, I love how my perception of fitness changed through CrossFit. It stopped being so much about the way I looked and became more of what I’m capable of doing. CrossFit has made me strong both physically and mentally. I look forward to helping others change their perception as well!

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PHYSICAL ACCOMPLISHMENT?

A couple of years ago, I did a Stand-Up Paddle Board endurance challenge at Lake Gaston, NC. I paddle boarded for 32 miles, from the Kerr Lake Damm to the Lake Gaston Damm. It took me nearly eleven and a half hours but it was by far one of my proudest moments!

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH CROSSFIT?

On deployment to Bahrain, I thought I would take this time to become more “fit”. I was mainly focusing on the aesthetic muscles, which after a few months I quickly became bored. After seeing a group of people doing CrossFit out in the 115 degree weather and just witnessing what they were capable of, I immediately became interested. My Executive officer at the time led a group on base called “Desert Dome CrossFit”. After approaching him about this intriguing workout, with little information he instructed me to show up the next morning with my flak jacket. So on May 25, my 20th birthday, I did my first CrossFit workout which was Memorial Day MURPH (one of the more intense workouts done in CrossFit). Completely out of breath and incredibly humbled, I was hooked.

WHY DO YOU LOVE CROSSFIT?

There are several reasons why I love CrossFit, but there is one specific aspect of it that really stands out to me. CrossFit will not only make you physically fit but mentally fit as well. It pushes you harder than what you thought you were capable of and gives you this sense of accomplishment as well as confidence. A confidence that I thinks affects all aspects of your life.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PHYSICAL ACCOMPLISHMENT?

While deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba my team became the first platoon to ever hike the entire perimeter of the base. The perimeter of the base was 18.4 miles and we were carrying around 50 pounds of gear. After reaching the half way point my feet had already started to bleed and blister. My back rubbed raw from the pack and both legs were cramping on the last two miles. It became a mental task as much as it was a physical task. Starting at 10 PM and ending at 7 AM the next day, it was by far the longest and most grueling hike I have ever been on.  And although it was very demanding and exhausting, it was an immense achievement for me and my platoon.
