SPOTLIGHT AHTLETE: Brandon Watkins

Big congrats to CFR athlete, Brandon Watkins, who is our July Spotlight Athlete! Brandon has been a steady and committed member of CrossFit Rolesville for quite some time now and his dedication has definitely paid off! He has shown great determination, growth, and overall will to do his very best. Brandon always comes in smiling, does work, supports his fellow CrossFitters, and leaves accomplished. We couldn’t be prouder as coaches to see the progress Brandon has made and couldn’t be happier as friends to have him apart of our CFR community!

“Crossfit was something that I wanted to try for a long time before working up the courage
to actually give it a shot. Like with anything new, the fear of failure was extremely intimidating. You and Thomas do an incredible job of making others feel welcome inside your gym, and have fostered a culture of inclusivity, regardless of crossfit ability. It is this environment and culture that made it easy for me to make coming to crossfit a routine part of my schedule. I appreciate all that you guys do! I hope to be a member at CFR for years to come!”

Age: 29

Occupation: Project Manager

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

There’s been several, and I’m not sure I can rank them. PR’ing my first workout is definitely up there. Also, my first rope climb, and handstand push up. Watching Thomas demonstrate those movements prior to the workout, I was thinking to myself, “there’s no way I can do that”. So, to get up and do it was a proud moment.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I drove past Crossfit Rolesville everyday for almost 6 months or so. I had friends that had done, or were currently doing crossfit, and had told me I should give it a shot.

The biggest reason I work out is definitely for my family. I have a two year old daughter, and another daughter on the way (due in November). I want to make sure I am maintaining a level of health and fitness that will allow me to watch them grow and not miss any of their major life milestones. I also workout because it is a great stress reliever!

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

Participating in this years Memorial Day Murph was awesome!

What is your daily motivation to workout?

Again, just to ensure that I am maintaining a certain level of health and fitness, and also to relieve stress. Outside of spending time with my family, the hour that I spend with at CFR is the best part of my day, and something that I look forward to daily.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite: Snatch; Least Favorite: Rowing. I hate rowing. Also, 30 inch box jumps. The boxes are very unforgiving on the shins.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Just do it. I drove past Crossfit Rolesville for 6 months or so before working up the courage to try it, and I knew after the first class that this something that I wanted to do. Also, you’re going to be sore, very sore, at the beginning. Fight through it, and after a while the soreness becomes more bearable.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

Anything rap, new or old, will help me pick it up during the workout.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

Huge NC State fan. Go Pack!

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Kirsten Quimby

We are super thrilled to announce that Kirsten Quimby is our June Spotlight Athlete! Kirsten has been an avid CFR athlete ever since her husband, Chris Quimby, persuaded her to give it a try. We’ve seen her grow as an athlete tremendously over the past year. She never shies away from a tough workout and is dedicated to her 6:30am CFR crew! Kirsten always takes on our monthly fitness challenges and continues to crush them. We couldn’t be more proud of her and CrossFit Rolesville is very luck to have her (and Chris!) apart of our community.

Age: 28

Occupation: Account Manager

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Finally being able to RX a WOD!

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

From Chris, my husband. He bugged me for years to try CrossFit with him. I was always apprehensive though because lifting anything heavy was so intimidating to me. He finally convinced me and now I keep coming back for more! I love the variety and never ending physical and mental challenges that CrossFit brings.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

PRing or seeing someone else PR. It’s exciting to see your hard work pay off!

What is your daily motivation to workout?

To be healthy, relieve stress, and maintain an active lifestyle.

Favorite and least favorite movements

Favorite: Kettlebell Swings or Deadlifts

Least Favorite: Rowing, definitely rowing.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Stick with it. Be patient, learning everything will take awhile. The foam roller and lacrosse ball will become your new BFF’s! CFR has such a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

I’m a big fan of house music, but really anything that gets me fired up!

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I studied abroad in Australia 🙂

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Tim Manton

Tim Manton has been a steady member with us since we opened back in March 2016 and we are extremely proud to recognize him as our spotlight athlete this month! He’s very humble and driven with an impressive talent for picking up new and complicated movements quickly. It definitely has not gone unnoticed, of how well Tim takes direction and coaching cues. He has a solid work ethic and is consistently at our 5:30am classes. We are so glad we have Tim (and now his awesome wife, Katie) apart of our CFR family.

Age: 31

Occupation: CPA

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Finally hitting double unders.  It took a few solid weeks to get them down.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I live right down the street and drove by when CFR was opening.  I had done Crossfit a few years ago for a few months, and wanted to give it another shot.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

The 1 year anniversary party during the 17.5 workout.  To see a group of people of all ages come together and support each other in that way was truly inspiring.

What is your daily motivation to workout?

To try and be as healthy as I can.  I sit at a desk all day, so getting up first thing in the morning and being active is very important to me.  Also, since my wife has now joined, I’m extra motivated to not catch any additional grief for not going!

Favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite movement is the clean, least favorite is Rowing.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Don’t be intimidated.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

Anything that has Rap.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I’m a huge baseball fan.

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Lynda Ruiz-Orta

Lynda Ruiz-Orta has been a long standing member of the CFR community and we’d love to recognize her this month as the spotlight athlete! Lynda is one of the most kind-hearted people we have ever met and we absolutely love her friendly vibes she brings to class. She is also one of CFR’s first pregnant athletes and we’ve been blown away by her determination and drive to still stay active during her pregnancy. Lynda is one strong momma and we are extremely proud to have her as a friend and member at CrossFit Rolesville.

Age: 30 on April 12

Occupation: hairstylist

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Definitely accomplishing my first box jump.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I live right around the corner, saw the signs before CFR opened. I train to stay healthy for me and my family. And to be a good example for my kids to see, eating healthy and working out is important. Something I want them to strive for as they grow up.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

Ladies night WOD and Wine! Love those!

What is your daily motivation to workout?

Working out gives me the energy I need for the day. I may feel tired right after the workout but I feel so alive at the same time. It gets me motivated to get stuff done.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

My least favorite has to be missing the medball and getting smacked in the face doing wall balls. Lol.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Once you use those 7 free days to try it out, you will be hooked!

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

Definitely “Headstrong” by Trapt! I tend to kick up the pace when I hear that song. Love it!

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I was a dancer most of my life and then a hairstylist. Art has always been my thing. Crossfit has definitely become an art to me. I feel accomplished when I get something done right and I beat my personal record. And being pregnant now, WOW! I have felt so great! Best pregnancy yet!!! Definitely would recommend to continue crossfit for any woman who gets pregnant!

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Kelly Culp

For our March spotlight athlete, we chose a person who has more integrity and principle than anyone we know. He works incredibly hard during every WOD, usually leaves a big sweat angle on the floor afterwards, and is involved in the CFR community every chance he gets. This guy also loves to row and absolutely hates double unders…and if you haven’t guessed it by now, it’s none other than Kelly Culp! Kelly has been with us pretty much since we opened the doors of CFR and has continually grown as an athlete with his drive and consistency. We are super excited as coaches and as friends to see Kelly advance in CrossFit! We are extremely proud of Kelly and love that he (and his family!) are apart of our CFR family!

Age:  43

Occupation:  I feed the world, no seriously

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Probably my first muscle up.  That was something that I wanted to accomplish and it felt great to get the first one.  Also, I enjoy working out with my family.  It’s another activity that allows us to spend some time together.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

My wife has been involved in CrossFit for several years and has encouraged me to go, but I never did in the past.  She always said I would like it and when she saw that CFR was opening she signed us up.  She knew that once I was signed up I would at least check it out and I am still checking it out…..a year later.  Yep, she was right!

I am trying to maintain a level of fitness so that I am around to see my kids grow old and watch their families grow.  I also have goals in the box that I want to accomplish and I am not there yet.  Lastly, I train because I enjoy it.  The whole experience from the coaches, to the WOD’s, to the community.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

Anytime someone accomplishes something they have been working on or watching new members complete their first workout.  I like seeing the look of “I can’t believe I just did that.”

What is your daily motivation to workout?

I have goals that I am trying to accomplish.  It’s a great stress relief and is probably the one hour of the day (outside of time with my family) that I look forward to the most.  Overall, to try and stay in shape.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

I enjoy power cleans and rowing (I know, shocking).  No question, my least favorite movement are double unders.  I can’t stand them.  Conceptually they are so easy, but the whole jumping, spinning, arms in, don’t pike, etc seems to be a challenge to me.  Toes to bar is a close second, but I am getting better at those and they are now tolerable.  Again, I have goals and improving my DU’s is on the list.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Just walk through the door.  You will be glad you did.  All workouts can be scaled to the appropriate level, the coaching is great, and community is very supportive.  My only regret is that I did not start this sooner!

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

I like a wide range of music, but Linkin Park, Rob Bailey, and 80’s hair bands are good.  However, about two minutes into the workout it pretty much becomes noise as breathing becomes the main priority.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I am very fluent in sarcasm.  Ok seriously.  I actually can shear sheep and won the Indiana State championship several years ago.

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Brantley Richbourg

CrossFit Rolesville would like to recognize Brantley Richbourg as our February Spotlight Athlete! Brantley is a 36 Technical Architect (IT), a loving husband and father, and very dedicated crossfitter. We like to choose our spotlight athletes based on heart, receptiveness to coaching, involvement within our community, and dedication they have shown in the gym to achieve progress.  And Brantley fits this criteria perfectly! Brantley has progressed so much as an athlete and has become one of our good friends. We are extremely proud to have him apart of our CFR family.

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Recently it was my overhead squat improvement from when I first started. I could barely do the bar and the other week I did 110.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I drove by almost everyday and I was looking to get back into working out again and thought, heh why not Crossfit.   I train because it keeps me mentally grounded and I also enjoy being in better physical shape.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

When I surprised myself and did an arms only rope climb when I didn’t think I could.

What is your daily motivation to workout?

I feel good when I workout and I want more of that feeling.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite movement is probably cleans. Least favorite is either running or burpees.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Worry about form not weight.  (“YESSS!”, Coach Thomas & Coach Megan)

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

Anything hard rock that I like.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I love watching documentaries on Netflix. I’m a huge nerd.

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Natasha Poindexter

We’re kicking off the new year with Natasha Poindexter as our January image3Spotlight Athlete! Tasha is 22 (soon to be 23 on January 8th!), a bartender, and a nursing student. With work and school on her plate she always manages to make CFR and her fitness a priority. She has only been with us for a little over six months but has progressed tremendously. Several other athletes have noticed as well her increase in strength and stamina. Unfortunately, she is headed back to nursing school (which we wish her all the best!) but she will always be welcome at CFR and we are extremely proud to have her as an athlete and friend!

image1Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Hmm..probably the first time I completed a workout doing pull ups! Finally got that RX!

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I found CFR by googling Crossfit Rolesville haha. I train because it makes me feel great and I love seeing how much more I can accomplish each day.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

One of my favorite moments was when I finished “The Seven” workout with Thomas and Graham. That was one of the hardest workouts ever! Or the day I beat Ryan at Helen!!!

What is your daily motivation to workout?

Knowing how much good Crossfit does for my body and for my mindset. I always feel better when I leave the gym. Also, there is always some movement or PR to be accomplished and I always have a goal to work towards.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite Movement..does swinging on the rings with a band count? I highly recommend everyone to tryimage2
that. Least Favorite…running.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

We have all started at the same place you are right now. We all know what it’s like and everyone is here to help. We are one big family!

I am going to miss you guys TONS!! I am so happy that my first Crossfit experience was with you guys!

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Craig Mayhugh

For December, CrossFit Rolesville has chosen Craig Mayhugh as our spotlight athlete! Craig runs two small businesses, is a loving husband, has six kids and still makes time to get a workout in at CFR. He has been progressing tremendously, always gives it his all during a WOD, and instantly makes friends with anyone who walks in the door.

image1The first time we met Craig he was chasing us down, dragging a huge trash can behind him and yelling “hey you” in Home Depot. If you have ever seen Craig, he’s a pretty big dude and I thought for sure we were getting in trouble with Home Depot security for some reason! But in actuality, he had spotted our logo on the back of Thomas’s shirt and was curious about CrossFit and our new location. We had about a five minute conversation and we could instantly tell he was one awesome guy! Craig and his son Trent have been with us for several months now and we are completely proud to have them apart of the CFR family and call them friends!

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

Honestly I have a bunch but the first time I made the rope climb and slapped the I-beam was a highlight for me for sure. I have a lot of weight to pull up that rope! Also watching Trent deadlift 225 for the first time was equally exciting. He didn’t think he could do it.

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?fullsizerender

I wanted to try CrossFit for years but lacked the courage to step in and give it a go. Aaron Grossman encouraged me to give the week trial a go and called me names to try and challenge my masculinity until I tried it. Honestly I train for my overall health. I used to be on anti-depressants and was really close to 300 pounds. I kinda just lost my way for a while. Being a veteran I knew how to stay in shape and take care of myself but the discipline maybe or desire was lost. My relationship with Jesus has been reestablished and my perspective on a lot of things have changed.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

The end of any AMRAP? Again I have a lot but hearing from Thomas how Trent is doing while I’m not there is probably my favorite. It’s nice to hear others brag on your son.

What is your daily motivation to workout?

Good question. Something has shifted in me where I now see it as an opportunity rather than an obligation. It makes me a better me. When I’m a better me others will benefit from that. I should want to give my family and friends the best version of me possible.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

I’m not a huge fan of 30″ box jumps. I’m super slow but will get faster. I like all powerlifting movements. I look forward to landing my first heavy snatch and being able to complete drop and get under the bar. Have to keep working on my mobility overall for that. I’ll get there.

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

image2Keep going. Yes, it’s hard. Really hard, but our bodies were designed to do hard things. We were made to sweat and be exhausted. It feels good to lay on the floor wiped out and if you need to cry about it…go ahead. I have a few times. That feels good too. It’s just an amazing feeling to show yourself what you can do that you haven’t or thought you’d never be able to do again. So simply said. Don’t quit.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

I’m an old Rage fan. Anything from 90’s rock. However Thomas and Trent have gotten me to appreciate newer rap that I don’t know the names to.

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I have 6 kids and run two small businesses. Im blessed to be married to my high school sweet heart of 19 years that I’ve had a crush on since the 3rd grade. Still do!  You might not think because of my size but I was a pretty good soccer player in my youth. I played for 13 years and we won our state championship in Virginia my senior year. Do t see too many 200+ pound soccer players 🙂

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Katie Brown

Congratulations to our November Spotlight Athlete, Katie Brown! Some of the reasons why we chose this strong mom of three is because of her kind-hearted spirit, receptiveness to coaching, and dedication she has shown in the gym to achieve progress. Just recently she overcame her fear of box jumps and got her first Rx! Katie knows how to keep grinding even when the workouts get tough and sets a great example to her spunky kids Kai, Emily, and Drew. We are extremely proud to have Katie (and her kids!) apart of the CrossFit Rolesville family! 14502847_10209198739359166_4052053860356240381_n

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

My first Rx!

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I drove by and always wanted to try Crossfit so I emailed Megan from the website.

Because I like to feel strong and have energy. I also like the people at Crossfit 🙂

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

My first favorite was when I was finally able to do box jumps instead of stacking weights. My second was my first Rx.

unnamedWhat is your daily motivation to workout

There’s always something to work on. There’s always a skill I’d like to accomplish or get better at. I also think making fitness part of my life is good for my kids to see. And they like coming to crossfit too! I want to stay as flexible and strong as I can for as long as I can.

Favorite and least favorite movements?

I already said favorites, so least favorite — I struggle with those damn pull ups!

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?

Come and join the fun. There’s all different fitness levels, body shapes, ages. You’re never too old, or too out of shape to start. Everyone starts somewhere and Megan and Thomas are great about watching your form to make sure you’re doing things safely. Be proud of your accomplishments — you’ve worked hard for them! Just show up. That’s half the battle.

One song that gets you amped up during a WOD?

I don’t even hear the music half the time. I’m too busy having conversations with myself about how I CAN lift that again, and I WILL do it!

Tell us something about yourself that we don’t already know.

I talk a lot. I think you may know more than you care to! Let’s see….I’m a country girl who I grew up in rural Ohio but haven’t lived there since 1996. I left that one horse town and moved out to California and LOVED it.  I also have a green thumb and love flowers and working in gardens. And if I had more time, I’d be riding my horse a lot more. 🙂

SPOTLIGHT ATHLETE: Aaron Grossman

Our Spotlight Athlete for October is…A-A-RON! Aaron Grossman is an outstanding guy, loving father as well as husband, and also served our country in the United States Air Force. He was one of the first 30 members to sign up at CFR and has been a great person to get to know over the past couple of months. Although he has quite a hectic schedule, he always makes time for his workouts and we commend him on his dedication. Aaron is probably one of the funniest, quirkiest people we have met and we love every minute with him! Every class he comes to he has a smile on his face, a coffee in his hand, and some crazy, witty joke or comment that has everyone cracking up. We have some stellar athletes here at CrossFit Rolesville and Aaron Grossman is a great sample of the amazing people we have training inside our gym!

Processed with Snapseed.

Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit Rolesville?

My proudest accomplishment was when I finally did a power clean correctly. I didn’t realize I did it right until Thomas’s eyes lit up with excitement and said “You did it”! I could tell it was a rewarding moment for him as a coach! His response made me realize that conquering something I initially struggled with was a great thing. We embraced immediately after! Not really, but I wanted to. :]

How did you find CFR? Why do you train?

I live right around the corner and saw the sign.

Why I train? For almost 20 years I have struggled with severe anxiety and depression among other ailments. I was sick and tired of sleeping my life away. I train to get the “Crazy” out. I train to keep my mind from telling me I’m worthless. I train to keep from shaking with anxiety. I train to be a better son of God. I train to be a better Husband, Father, Son, Friend etc. I have not arrived or figured it all out, but I know my life has changed since I started CrossFit.

What is your favorite moment so far at CFR?

The Snatch

Least favorite movements?

The clean is my least favorite. It hurts my collar bone. I know. I’m a sissy!

What’s one thing you would tell to a new CrossFitter?
